Description Me and my friend agree, well, that NUMA is Trash. The rules, the relatively unfriendly community, we dun like it. So we created our own unofficial Map Posting Forum, http://nwotn.forumotion.com/

Hope you enjoy it.

Mr Morbid.

I think you are failing to see the thing which everyone has been telling you and that thing is:

Keep making maps until you get good feedback.

You aren't born an amazing author and you won't ever become an amazing author if you shuffle off to La-La Land with 2 of your friends from real life to make shitty maps over and over again. Putting 15 gauss turrets in a small room doesn't work and isn't fun, and it also lags the game, making it more difficult to play.

There are a series of levels which are like a cross between newer maps and older maps that you should play because it will make you better at playing the game which will make you want to create more difficult and interesting maps.

And since you said you weren't sure of the rules, here is a complete list of information about NUMA and map making in general: NUMA FAQ [forum.ninjarobotyeti.com]

Cheers! I hope those two links help you on your quest to become the best Map Maker in the WOOORLD!
this [nwotn.forumotion.com] is going on my helpful N extensions area (area as in part of my profile)

Great site BTW, im pretty sure numa is run by its admins and the owner left it

eh,

i support the idea of creating a better alternative for yourself if you don't like something. i'd say they tried. was it a polished, nuanced, well-planned attempt? no, and it didn't go very far in what it said it would do, but i'd give them points for the spirit of getting for themselves what they want even when it isn't available.

gloomp

is a genius. I may have already said it, but making something new isn't worth flaming NUMA for. Those who like it will migrate, those who don't, won't. It's as simple as that. This is probably the worst welcome I've had back. Someone flaming the hot maps with a ton of shitty maps trying to get people to adopt their new forum. Make a shiny and awesome map, it might sway some people's opinion. I, for one, do not like this method and especially the manner in which you are approaching it definitely strikes a chord in moving to a forum where YOU are the admin.
get to know the community :)

Huh?

Oh, advice. Nah, just to talk to people, maybe get people playtesting, or discussing the best movies of the year, or obscure bands... any number of things, really...

But...

Advice, for what?
mIRC, X-Chat and Chatzilla (firefox plugin) are a few clients. The server info is in the thread I linked but here it is too:
Server: irc.mountai.net
Channels I would recommend: #n-highscores, #n-mapping
Rules: http://ninjarobotyeti.com/n/n-rules.html (the server they're referring to is not used anymore)
I think that's all you need to know to get on.

'tis not IM

It's IRC - there is a differnencenec.

You see,

I know it as IM.

Internet Relay Chat

"is a form of real-time Internet text messaging (chat) or synchronous conferencing. [en.wikipedia.org]
this topic [forum.ninjarobotyeti.com] should explain how to get there, I haven't read it all though. I *think* it's up to date.

IRC?

What's IRC?
You might want to go to #n-mapping and stay away from #n for a while, #n can be rather degenerate, especially at night! I can explain to you how to get there if you like.

I suggest

you get on the IRC and get some advice from the people there.

's alright,

And I'm sorry if It sounded like I was attacking you.

While I was away my thoughts clarified themselves. A much better analogy would be how when someone is learning a new activity of any kind, as they keep trying, they will get better at it, and they will become better at judging the quality of other peoples' attempts. Early mappers simply hadn't had as much time to refine their craft. Actually, that's more of a literal explanation!

:3

Hahahah

Computers that are faster... Go figure...

Everybody I know says my computer is trash and incredibly slow...

I'm sorry I attacked you.

google is my friend

i have friends in google

DARN YOU LSUDNY

I was looking all over for that picture. D:
They were ugly, no or little attention paid aesthetics.
They were ridiculously hectic.
They were too long.
Their gameplay was often awkward compared to what I like.
This is just my opinion, but I'm sure it's shared by others. And like it or not, opinion does affect how something like this is liked.

Also, the Mozart analogy doesn't work because the new stuff isn't Classical music. Mozart was art-music, Kesha is probably entertainment. It should be noted that I don't know anything about Kesha, and that rock music isn't all mindless entertainment music.
I was not supporting that view either, just explaining it.
;___;
I wasn't referring to technological advancements, the spirit of rock really hasn't changed much. Sure, instruments have evolved to a certain extent, but since N was released, we have computers much faster than they were then! Anyhow, that wasn't the best analogy probably, as for nothing having changed, we discovered glitches, styles (palemoon style and losttortuga style and generic races) in the same sense that new types of rock music appeared (grunge, punk, metal, alt-rock, indie, nu-metal, rap-rock. all very different from the beatles, yet still obviously rock (well, metal is somewhat its own genre nowadays)) some have gone out of style but others remain.

I don't see...

Why just because something is old it's trash.

Just because Mozart is old doesn't mean people say "This is trash compared to that new great stuff Ke$ha."

correction

the style we call oldschool developed until 2007.
but that's a pretty shitty argument about the mapping progression. the oldschool style developed until 2007 i think and then the modern style began to rule. try to compare a bunch of maps back from 2005 (maximo, krusch, tktktk, etc.) and a bunch of maps today (destiny, radium, etc.). NO comparison.

cheers maxson

Really.

I can't win with you guys. How can something progress is nothing new has been invented? Your Analogy with Rock Music fails because since The Beatles things have advanced, new technology, advancements to older instruments, and other things. But since N_v14 was released. Nothing new has been invented. So how can there be new things. And to Gloomp and Apakenua, IT WASN'T JUST PEOPLE SAYING OUR LEVELS WERE TRASH. IT WAS OTHER THINGS TOO. If i have to say that again I'll die. Lord.

I LOVE YOU GLOOMP

I LOVE YOU SO MUCH

As a rule of thumb,

Most of the levels in userlevels, all of them actually, are from 2005 or 2006 or whenever N_v14 got released. Since then mapping has progressed considerably and there has been a greater emphasis on aesthetics and some other things (I can't think what they could be right now). For that reason, maps inspired by those old levels probably will be judged as not as good as what is being made now, simply because there's been all sorts of changes. So in a sense this would be like userlevels being a bunch of Beatles songs, while NUMA is modern rock music, you now have more sub-genres, more refined ideas (arguable I guess), and most importantly, new "fads". So a good place to start off learning about modern mapping classics (and some old time classics too) would be to have a browse through the featured maps, some of them suck, but some of them rock! (Aha! I knew I was going somewhere with that analogy with rock music!)

Now, I haven't played any of your other maps, nor have I looked at their comments. Ideally someone would have had the decency to give you constructive feedback, but given my experience I would guess that there is a 95% chance they did not.

And finally, I have nearly always mapped for me (except for carnivorous rocks, which was a disaster), (keep) do(ing) the same and I'm sure you will find enjoyment regardless.

I apologize if this comment is needlessly long, I must go now. (only vaguely proofread)

Well

I hope I'm improving on every level i make, I've been playing the user levels you get with N Way of the Ninja. But people still say i haven't got any better. I will someday though.
then I suggest you read some of the guides here: http://forum.ninjarobotyeti.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=620 [forum.ninjarobotyeti.com].
A couple of extra tips for how you can improve:
-Play other people's maps, particularly those whose maps are well received, and try and work out what they're doing well.
-Occasionally ask for people to play your maps and offer feedback; not too often, or it will get irritating, but asking for a little constructive criticism once in a while won't go amiss

To be brutally frank, the reason people say that your maps are bad is because they are. In that sense, your maps are pretty typical of most new users and are nothing to be ashamed of. Just keep mapping and eventually you'll get better and more people will play your maps. Complaining about it, however, isn't going to get you anywhere.

NARC is a future replacement for NUMA, created by southpaw, incluye, scythe and others. It isn't fully functional yet but is in the works.

nevermind

wait wait

apakenua and others

what is narc?

Quite the Contary

I haven't "Shrugged off" a lot of good advice. I've actually applied alot of it to the Forum.

Also, Drayr, I've always spent about an hour on each level unless it was a joke. And I'm still told they're trash.

But maybe I'm just a terrible map maker and you're great.

.

I have never experienced any real unfriendliness here; quite the contrary.
Don't really understand the problem with the hot maps system. Sure, a map can get bumped off without ever being commented on, but a lot of the time that's more an issue of when you post it, such as when there's nobody on.
Besides, a two map limit is reasonable; if you pump out maps quicker than that its most likely they aren't of the best quality. Spending more time on one map is a thousand times better than less time on half a dozen maps.
I'm sorry to say I think gloomp nailed it on the head. :/

Gloomp,

It wasn't just me leaving, and I'm glad you think me and my friends maps are that awesome.

I, for one, am switching over.
