Map Data

Description Good luck. Cause you're gonna fucking need it.

This map was featured on 2010-08-07

Dialect #67 by Cooby is one of the best maps I have played to date. The map, despite its outwards appearance, only has two areas in which the player is challenged. But those two areas are so conceptually genius that no more map is needed. They work together to create a map that is intelligently puzzley, before moving onto some more familiar crazy chaingun carnage. And even that is done in a conceptually genius fashion.

Did I mention it’s hard as balls? — _destiny^-

"Funny" stories usually are usually anything but and just cheapen the map.
But then again being on some form of hiatus I'm not free enough to be able to fill up all these empty slots for reviews. Props for those who can.

And anyway the map's too difficult for me, I can't judge it.

EVERONE SHOULD BE A REVIEWER FOR A WEEK, THAT'LL SHUT US ALL UP, THEN WE'LL UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH MORE WE SHOULD APPRECIATE THE SACRIFICE REVIEWERS MAKE FOR US, IT'S A THANKLESS JOB.

Good review, although I fail to appreciate the map because I lack the skill to pass that mine field. That's a shame, because the rest of the map looks fun.

I don't understand

How do you make map

@Lightning

Damn straight.

In my opinion,

the review properly describes this map. That is certainly an interesting thwump mechanic cooby. I remember having an idea as such, but believing it was impossible to pull off on cue, I gave up on creating a challenge out of it. Today, as I continue to play this map, I have only gotten past it a few times. I adore this map because of that one part alone. Yet, you threw in another interesting piece. Not only do you make the chaingun part interesting, it was interesting to watch the drones move into that little corner (when I died).

In accordance with the other comments posted, opinions change. Maybe the map isn't worthy of a review, maybe it is. As long as an interesting map is introduced, I believe the reviewer's job has been done properly. This map is interesting and it introduces two things not commonly seen in maps, an innovation. Aren't innovations to the game what we're here for? Otherwise, we could be playing the levels that came with the game over and over again if you sought nothing new (i.e. using a locked door instead of those drones).
And i know compelling descriptions are hard to write in succesion for any reviewer, but i just hate it when i see a whole bunch of stupid generalizations that don't sell the map, or a funny but totally irrelevant story that was either based on the title or could be written for any other map. I still think that because its so hard, reviewers will jump at the opportunity to write a good review even if the map is only remotely good. Just my opinion.

hmmmmm

*sticks nose in air and mumbles some prestigious sounding bullshit about how the map isn't that interesting*

but it's good. 4

(I DONT WANT TO ADMIT THAT THIS MAP IS GREAT. WHY DIDNT I THINK OF THIS FIRST?!?)
a well-written story will often make me want to play the map in question, more so than the bland description/hyperbole you espouse. I probably would've ignored Eco-Kill [nmaps.net] if, to be perfectly honest, it'd gotten a work-up like the one destiny's done here, instead of palemoon's electrifying flash of fiction. It's really goddamn hard to write an interesting, straightforward description of a map. I've managed it, yes, and so have a few other people, but the vast majority of NUMA isn't up to that task, and it would be a mighty small roster if we were that stringent about quality. Honestly, I wish we could be, but I doubt the five or so people that would apply and get accepted would have the dedication to keep up a feature a day for more than a month or two. I agree it's awful that kkstrong is a reviewer, but at least he can churn them out.

oh, ethel

don't get me wrong, I wasn't really taking it personally, but your comment seemed to be directed to the reviewers in general, and I can only talk about specifics for myself.

fucking a, i love you palemoon.
And i'm glad you advocate thoughtful conversations on your maps, unlike others who have mods remove them completely : /

Nah,

Ethel, it's totally cool. I don't think you hate me lol. I was just responding with my own opinions. If I sounded harsh or sarcastic it's just the whole 'tone doesn't translate well over the internet' thing. I always love to discuss map specifics and the reviewing system.

I'm glad I got other people to talk about it too. It's cool to see their opinions, even though they don't all match mine. Seriously, you'd be hard pressed to find me seriously offended about anything to do with NUMA, lol.
And i wouldn't either. It's not something any reviewer does ALL the time, but just so many of them seem so half-assed and tedious. As for destiny, this just happens to be the map that i expressed my opinion on. Don't take it personally, i actually enjoyed the review for this (which is the reason i played it in the first place).

From the

little time I've spent here, I have noticed that most (all) of the feature map choices are subjective in nature. I actually appreciate that, as it brings something a little more personal to the entire process, instead of more mechanical. As long as the map was enjoyable (as this one was), and maybe the review made me chuckle, I don't really give a damn.

i cant

do the first part

:x

cool map though
It may be true that cooby has made better maps, it may be true that a lot of people have made better maps. But that is a subjective notion, and cannoy be decided by a large group of people. The closest you can get is a majority agreement, which this map does have.

And I struggled an unusual amount writing this review. I didn't want to talk about what is in the map, and yet I did want to keep the review focused on the map itself rather than a poem or something. Combined with this is my first non-race feature, and I know a lot more about races (and therefore it is easier to talk about them in review) made this quite a challenge for me. I sincerely hope I didn't sound like I just threw this together, because that is not the situation. If it is of an unsatisfactory standard however, then I apologise. I'm hardly a literary genius.

ethel

That is...pretty insulting. I don't know if any of the maps you refer to are from me, but personally, I do not do this. My witticisms and puns in reviews are something that take effort and thought, and the implication that I am not actually a decent writer, but sacrifice integrity of the system to make myself appear so is frankly a horrible thing for you to write.

I am sure I speak for every reviewer in saying that that is not the case.

thwump

is super cool
On a side note, i truly believe that 50% of the mpas selected to be featured these days are simply because they have a name or appearance that promotes a funny or easy review. Sure, some reviews are fine, but take a look at some of the early reviews written by gloomp/atob/pheidi. They make you want to play the map, whereas sweeping generalizations and off topic storylines do not.
My point is that there are so many other better maps so choose from (of yours) that i don't think this one is worth showing to everyone.

That was..

hard as balls

<3Deja

I miss your face.

Bitesizing.

Bring it back.

First of all,

thank you for the review, _destiny^.

Ethel, you’re talking about the drones, right? Yeah, they’re pretty much a gimmick. They don’t serve any real function beyond that of a locked door, as you said. The only reason they’re there is for their own aesthetic value and the aesthetic value of having all the switches on the right be trap door switches. That being said, I don’t think they’re a valid point of criticism in that they’re just a gimmick. As we both agree, they have the exact functional value of a locked door. I think you could criticize the map by pointing out that you think they look like crap, but beyond that it seems pretty pointless to me. I mean, even if they were replaced with a locked door you wouldn’t like the rest of the map any more than you do. Your opinion is that the gameplay is terrible anyway.

The entire map wasn’t founded on this gimmick, either. The map was founded on the thwump mechanic, which I thought was a fun and challenging enough mechanic to base a map around.

While I don’t know all of the stats about how many rates and comments maps have been getting since the beginning of featuring, I do agree that the reviewing system is too convoluted to stand by itself. However, I don’t really know what you mean about the ‘mediocre map pool.’ Do you mean that the quality of maps has decreased since the beginning of featuring? I’d completely disagree with you. Or do you mean that the maps chosen for reviews are not necessarily worthy of feature? In that case I’d agree about a portion of the maps and I’d suggest what I’ve suggested before: a system where features are not up to just one reviewer, but multiple.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

What if one day you woke up and had flat skin were your nipples should be?

And then you leave your room and find out your dad died. And then weeks later you realize you were born without nipples and your dad had been sneaking into your room at night and had been leaving hickeys on your chest were your nipples should be. Not for anything sexual, but just so you could fit in with everyone else.

God bless you Dad

Ethel its true that that could have easily been replaced by a locked door, but whats the fun it that? D: Finding these unique, outside the box ideas in N are one of the biggest reasons I even started making and playing maps.

Not a very

awesome run, but YATA! AGD
Demo Data
and i don't really like superlatives in reviews :s

I've wanted

to make a level with the back-thwump riding for a while; I used to do that in the story mode levels for kicks. ^^ Chaingun usage was also badass.
The entire map was founded on some useless gimmick that could have easily been replaced by a locked door. When features first came out they would generally get 40+ rates extra rates and comments by the time the next map was up, but with this new system chock full of convoluted reviews and a mediocre map pool, it seems as though hardly anyone still cares about what map is on the home page. Son, I am dissapoint.
It is indeed awesome.

4aved

Just a bit too hard for me, but the mechanics are really nice.

Fastest agd so far.

I really enjoyed the map, and also good review, destiny. ^_^ 4.5, rounded up. 5aved.
Demo Data

not a fast AGD

but very satisfying. 5aved. I have always loved the mechanic you have used here at the start; riding the back of thwumps.
Demo Data

Hahaha

Awesome demo, _destiny^-, way to persevere. Many thanks, as well.

AGD

God damn that was tough. One of the best maps i've ever played, for sure. The difficulty was perfect for me, and the amount of originality and innovatism that you've squeezed out of just three sections is brilliant. On top of that, the map looks absolutely stunning.

5aved.
Demo Data

absolutely awesome. I love the ideas here.

5/5

AMAZING, best map i have seen in a while with the ideas used, good job

Good point, l_d.

But it can certainly be better.
