Description Rough. But I know that's how you like it.

This map was featured on 2010-06-10

Most puzzles lack something: thematic and conceptual execution. Hell, most action maps miss that completely, and what's an action map without a concept? Regardless, Home fulfills both the jumper aspect of an excellent puzzle, and the over-arching aesthetic theme of a superlative adventure map.

Brilliant integration of the two is where it stands out from the crowd and enters my feature list -- Home is incredibly satisfying to look at both because of how well the aesthetic theme holds together, and because careful inspection is necessary to complete the map efficiently. — flagmyidol

for the sole reason that I could sort by it and expect to find the good maps of the day, without having to sort through the rest. Featuring maps is one per day, that it all it should be. But if I wanted to play ten good maps, I turned to bitesized maps.
If regular folks could submit possible bitesize maps to a group of Bitesizers, and they agree, then better maps will be bitesized. No user should need to submit more than three a day, so if ten people are Bitesizers, that produces thirty maps a day at most. Also, maps with more Bitesizers approving of them get higher placement on the Bitesized map list. A user may submit up to two maps a day to the Bitesizers group, and may also be banned from submitting if they abuse that privilege.

I know the current Featurers would be upset if they lost their current status, so what if we had Feature Fridays? Two of the Featurers could submit reviews that day, so they would have a lower importance, but would be read my more people. This would mean that ten of the Featurers would have to be axed I'm afraid, unless every week the ten were to switch off.

Quote tags don't work right on NUMA.

I think

worthless is a pretty strong word, atob. I think a lot of people enjoyed bitesizing because, oftentimes, they found maps they enjoyed playing. Nonetheless, you make a good point; the system was not perfect. The bitesized section may very well have been spammed into oblivion, which is probably one of the reasons it was abandoned.

There are many ways to protect against that happening again.

First, control the number of people who are allowed to bitesize. Too many people bitesizing maps means too many bitesized maps.

Second, make it a group process. Perhaps a map must be nominated for a bitesize and then subsequently voted on a certain number of times (1,2, or 3) by bitesizers to actually make it. The more people agree, the more likely a map is to be of high quality.

Finally, control the number of nominations a person can make in a day. The fewer times a person can bitesize a map, the more thought they put into the maps they bitesize.

I agree with cooby.

Review collabs would be a very cool thing to try out sometime. Perhaps that could be a NUMACON contest, or something?
Featured maps force the reviewer to put actual thought into their selection and articulate why, with Bitesizing users just click a button and the section is spammed with map after map.

Featured maps have much more of a quality filter, and while not everyone is going to agree on every map, it sure beats the hell out of bitsize which literally become worthless toward the end of it's run due to the sheer number of maps featured there.

On IRC the other day we were tossing around the idea of having bitesizing that only came into effect after more than one person agreed, which I thought was a cool idea.

Either way, sorry you guys didn't like this map, but I did! :)

Yes

One of my featured maps is horrible.

Honestly,

I agree with l_d, G_H_M, ferox, and atob. I mean, obviously I liked this map enough at the time to submit it. However, I think I made some pretty poor decisions here, especially with the gold.

Nonetheless, I truly do appreciate the effort and consideration you put into the review, flagmyidol.

Call me an old-fashioned whiner, but what happened here is another reason I still prefer bitesizing. It's apparent that a large portion of people don't find this map feature-worthy. Criticism and differing opinions are good, sure, and a feature is just one person's opinion; disagreement is inevitable.

However, I don't enjoy seeing this level of dislike on a featured map; I think this is where the matter-of-opinion part breaks down a little bit. Because, in my opinion, a featured map should inspire some measure of unanimity in the people's response. And it does, most of the time.

Don't get me wrong, the featuring system works for the most part. And, again, this is nothing against flagmyidol's review - this is ALL about opinion. But maybe it's time to step away from the single-reviewer system. Perhaps group reviews could work - I don't know. Perhaps the two systems could work side-by-side: group-reviewed featured maps and single-selected bitesized maps - I don't know. I don't know the system that will work, but I think what we have now is a system that can be improved and I want you guys to start thinking about how.

Call me an old-fashioned whiner.

I liked the optional top section. It was a little too awkward for my tastes; then again I'm not a puzzle kind of guy... hmmm.... nr

.

Hey, Cooby produced two features in a row! Nice.

As for the map, I see appeal in it, but didn't particularly enjoy playing it. But that's probably because it's too hard for me.

lol nice map

I might produce a demo recording after I have acted on my intent to perambulate to my residence's place of food preparation to integrate consumable materials into a delectable construct.
:D

I thought I messed up when I opened this in a new tab. I'll make a demo soon.

...

The map feels uneven with its difficulty curve, looks sloppy, and isn't a puzzle.

It's alright

I guess.

What's the point of the top section?
This is a nice idea; the review doesn't fit well, but I'll 4ave it anyway, I like it.

Really, l_d? I'm honestly surprised. I fell in love with this one. :)
I don't think the map looks very good - the gold spiral is a nice idea that isn't executed very well - and the tiles are plain boring. There wasn't really any concept to the map, it was just a few obvious but tricky to pull of jumps.

Also, I had to look up the word thematic D:<

Didn't seem like much of a puzzle to me, just some tough jumps. Regardless, it's a pretty great map, and the review is certainly quality. ^_^

Demo

I got this map hitting "Random" a few weeks ago. Didn't get a demo in. Cool feature.
