Map Data

Description Sensei entry. Speedruns would be interesting.

This map was featured on 2010-09-24

For My Part, I Choose Headaches by Pheidippides stood out from the rest by being more than just a mine jumper, being more than a lifeless minefield of tired attempts at creating atmosphere without enemies. With For My Part, Pheidippides blends suspenseful gameplay with beautiful tiles with stylistic object placement. On top of this, the map plays extremely well, especially when the fact that there are no mines taken into consideration. Congrats on the win Pheidi! — blackson

hot dog

people are still arguing about maps what?
fav'd btw.

fuck you man

I'll never make anything this beautiful.
Example demo.

Thematically sound.

I'm too horrible with the game to even fluidly progress to the upper section, so it didn't take long for me to give up trying for the gold. Whatever I could manage was great fun, though. I tend to slip on the tiny ledges and get rash with movement, so coupled with the splatter of mines I do agree the gameplay is quite exciting in a way.

Fav'd.

Okay.

Blackson: You are sexy.
Pheidippides: You are as well.
Carry on.

A response thing

Yahoozy: You're right. The negativity towards the other maps wasn't intended, but it is definitely there. That's my bad.

Turtles: I try to make my reviews as straight to the point as possible. I prefer to say why I liked the map straight up rather than use some contrived analogy or story. This is just how I do it.

Maturity : Get Some

I'm going to agree with astheoceansblue. It's a good map, and you can say what you want, but try to maintain a minimal level if civility, and be more sporting. This isn't the only chance you'll ever have at winning Sensei, so you don't have to be embittered towards the winner. Just try again next time.

Don't stop NUMAcon!

I was really looking forward to October's! If you need a hand running it, I'd be happy to help with anything here really.

?

many fledgling authors have done well in numacon, I admit sensei is not a great example of this. Secondly, this is a mine only contest.

Its sad that we can't be more sportsman like and graceful when it comes to these contests. It seems like every month we are having another issue. It's fine to disagree with the results, but perhaps wording it differently would keep from these lunch room food fights we keep falling into. Anyways, I loved the map, congrats Pheidi.

Should we stop numacon? Its starting to feel like more grief than what it's worth.

I believe in intelligent design (of N maps)
The problem with NUMA and the community here is and has been twofold. The first is there is some sort of an 'elite' so to speak, making it difficult for many people to be integrated. Sure if they'd take an extra step on map making or on coding or whatever is needed around here, they'd be more respected, but it's not like anybody gives them much of a chance anyway. Or like anybody did. I've been 'gone' a while. I look at the winners of competitions, and I see names that I remember seeing all the time, mentioned by the same people who seem to manage everything. Sure, this could be due to the fact that they're the quality map makers around here, and not every name of every winner is one I know, but that's just the general pattern.

Second problem is everyone thinks they're all that. And they have for the past five years. Sure it's the internet, and nothing matters, but still. We're all too quick to attack each other. We're friends...well you're friends. Right? You guys all have a passion for the same game. You guys put up maps for each other so you can enjoy each others' creations. This place isn't a popularity contest. Or it shouldn't be. It's just guys (well mostly) hanging out enjoying a game and discussing the most random things ever on the Forums and IRC (or at least they used to; I haven't been around those in ages).

You guys are mature enough. I'm sure most of you are at least fifteen, which is older than I was five years ago when I first came around. By fifteen you should at least be human enough to accept others' mistakes and to try to provide constructive criticism instead of just saying 'this sucks' or 'i didn't like it'.

I don't know the terms of the competition, so I'm not going to say much about the map, but I thought it could be improved by more gold or enemies or something other than mines. For all I know this was a mine only contest, though, in which case good job following rules.

Also, blackson, I don't know how big reviewing is anymore, but saying something like "beautiful tiles with stylistic object placement" could probably be said about any good map. I usually like it when the reviewers make their reviews as interesting and fun to read as the map is to play. Maybe the guidlines for reviews have changed, but I always like something descriptive so I know what I'm getting into.

I'm sure I contradicted myself about a million times in the above paragraph. Sorry. I should be doing other things right now anyway...
So how can it win Sensei?

Cool map.

Loved it, thought the gameplay was varied enough to make it fun, and the tiles were beautiful. Congratulations.
I really didn't like it. AMLT said it so well I really don't feel I need to get too in-depth with my dislike, just refer to his post. Rating it a 2, not fun at all.

Also, on a side note, if I get punished for this I don't really care.
Atob, sometimes I think you just need to know when to shut the fuck up. Really, your post was probably the most childish on this whole thread.
and didn't like this map either.
I don't care if I don't have the ability, it just doesn't appeal with all its cliches.

Well...

Congrats on the win, but I really don't like this map. The tiles are repetitive, the mines are repetitive, and it's full of bad mapping cliches. 2

atob, you are a moderator, but you don't have to be a mediator - not when any criticism presented on a map, as biting as it may seem, is perceived by you to be malicious instead of critical, which is most often not the case. Despite the privilege to be as critical or pessimistic as they want, you task yourself, vainly, with conditioning players with positivity. Here especially, you end up displaying more meanness than was originally conveyed (funnily enough, none).

I want to note the review, also. In a competition displayed on the website itself, meant to excite mapmakers of any ability to participate, a comparison belittling the other entrants would be a mistake. I'd like to ask the reviewer focus on just the winning map for NUMACON reviews.

Congratulations on your win, Pheidi, but I didn't like this map.

@ATOB

If your comment is directed at me at all, I congratulated him on IRC.
Pheidi is capable of much better maps than this, however.

Well...

Of course - a congratulations is in order.

Also, where are the other winners?

2/5

Also, this map really isn't that good. Anyway, well done.

LOL @ ATOB

I'm not even 13 yet.

PS

Most of the people calling this map lesser don't even have half the ability presented here.

That's probably what's going on.

Hey, if we're going to be childish...

I can't believe

How many of you are so horribly bitter that you need to post such negativity on a contest winner's map.

So you don't agree? How about simply saying well done and getting on with your day?

Children. :/

This is good...

But not good enough to even be in the top 5. I think it's mainly because it's Pheidi's map.
is it not enough for this map to be good, or the best, why do all the other maps have to be declared shit.
At the olympics, the commentators don't say "and Bolt wins the 100 metres, all the other athletes ran like my effing grandmother!"

Not good. Bland and repetitive gameplay with bland and repetitive tileset with slapped on bland and rushed gold.

2/5
But also i don't like this map

...?

I had 1/3 part in judging. This wasn't even my first pick.

But okay.
Blackson only liked it because it reminded himself of his own mapping style. GG.
I played this exact map, or something extremely similar months or years ago. The corner gold is identical at any rate.

"Beautiful tiles, you say?
I disagree seeing as it's basically similar patterns repeated over and over."

Consistency very often = aesthetically appealing. Do you also hate the same gold pattern being repeated throughout a map? I certainly don't.

I remember this.

I didn't like it.

After playing a couple more times, I have to disagree with the review's main parts.

-inb4 everyone disagreeing with me-

1. Pheidippides blends suspenseful gameplay with beautiful tiles with stylistic object placement.
The gameplay doesn't seem at all suspenseful to me. The mines aren't exactly difficult to avoid, and the map is too short to think 'oh I hope I don't die here as I've travelled so far!'.

2. ...the map plays extremely well...
As mentioned in my previous post, the gameplay seems repetitive - and I don't regard repetitiveness as anything great.

--

Oh, and the only reason I'm giving in-depth comments is because usually when I just reply with "this map isn't that great" I get slagged off for it.
I disagree seeing as it's basically similar patterns repeated over and over.
Due to the repetitive tile-patterns, the gameplay equally seems a little repetitive. The gold looks more like a rushed last-minute addition, and the mine positioning could be improved to give the map more flow.

The original Sensei post specifies: Try to do something unconventional and you’ll probably do well. Yet nothing about this map appears at all unconventional in my view.
Another thing the post mentions is replayability, yet I got quite bored of this after playing a couple of times - not something I'd likely return to in future just to play for the fun of it.

2.

Cuhwalllllllllllllllllled it.

They will be

once jerrod gets to a computer. I don't have the ability to post news topics.

beautiful map
