I liked a lot your thoughts here. It is quite certain your judgment, althought I think it is necessary for every author have some in-between maps time from time, even if these remain interesting facts and well above average. Just balance in a mapping career.
My favorite analogie is the one of the drunk nascar's driver that since his skill keep his car in track. Also, the other one is pretty cool too. Nice! XD

playing your maps these days makes me think of Beethoven if he had been inexplicably immortal. by now he would have progressed beyond "classical" music simply because he's been around long enough and seen so many stylistic fads come and go. and so he just composes this completely esoteric nonsense that you recognize to be brilliant, more or less, and yet it still leaves you unsatisfied and vaguely uncomfortable.
not to say you don't make good maps anymore, that would be wildly inaccurate. just there's so many in-between maps, like this one, that I don't really understand.
kinda of like you're driving in a nascar race but you've taken all these drugs. and out in the crowd, we can see that something freaky is going on; but it's okay because your reflexes alone are enough to keep you in the lead.
or like you're some hotshot pilot, but you're asleep at the wheel. but your johnson has learned how to operate the controls and fire the missiles so no one's really noticed yet. and even those that do notice aren't really in the position to complain either way.
I could keep making these analogies but I'm not sure if it's worth the effort anyways or if I'm just talking to myself.
