Nterviewed

By Tanner Rogalsky

spect has always been one of my favourite highscorers. He does some of the most precise runs you've ever seen. Aside from that, he's a dude of quite a lot of other skills. He's one of the few native German-speakers on the forums, actively participates in the #n IRC and has a few other projects going on.

Tanner: Post-Valentine's, we have the pleasure of being joined by spect for this issue of Nterviewed. How are you spect?
spect: Hey hey! I'm fine, I guess.

Tanner: You are currently in charge of running the NTTS. How did it come about that you took charge of it from Daddaluma?
spect: I don't really remember exactly. I think I just felt like running a highscoring contest as there hadn't been any highscoring contests back then. I just thought something was missing so I started a thread, asking if anyone was interested, and indeed, people loved the idea :) The early bird catches the worm, anyone could've had done that, I think.

Tanner: How was this year's NTTS different from last year's?
spect: The most obvious difference is that we (the judges) are not using maps from one specific levelpack, rather than choosing the maps ourselves from all available levelpacks. Furthermore, Style and Time are both separated, so there will be a winner in Style and Time. And... I think I'm lazier than last Season so my judging is taking even longer than usually ;)

Tanner: Are you going to continue running the NTTS? If so, are you planning any changes for the future?
spect: I'm quite sure I will continue running the NTTS, yes. And yeah, I guess there will be changes in the future.

Tanner: What's it like being part of a community where the official language isn't your native one?
spect: It's fun :) Seriously, you can't imagine how proud I feel when some people are writing "should of" or "your" instead of "you're". I really improved my English a lot here. And by now, it's not really a problem to write in English for me, it's almost like a native language to me now. You might notice that I'm taking quite long to answer your questions, though, and my pronunciation isn't getting any better by typing, either :P

Tanner: You used to make pretty impressive highscores. Why did you stop?
spect: Many reasons: The first one was probably that people (naem, jg9000 ) started taking my highscores (check 95-1 dude, it's THA BOMB!!) and I just couldn't retake them. The competition was getting harder and harder, and at some point, I think it was January or February 2006, I decided to stop. Another thing was the whole cheating affair with kryX and naem and the whole highscoring was getting more and more ridiculous. That's why I'm looking forward to N 1.5, as it should have some anti-cheating features.

Tanner: When you were highscoring, how did you pick which levels to go for?
spect: The levels I chose were really random. The first 0th I got was on 80-3 (worth watching, although the route now is totally different than it was back then). Then I went for levels in the 70-column, because they were easy and fun (75-4 is a nice example of my abilities). At one point though, I started going through the game and taking every level I could. I ended up with having 80 0ths :)

Tanner: Do you have any advice for players who want to be better at highscoring?
spect: Nope, actually not. Just play the game. Practice (playing more) will surely help you, but I can't guarantee anything.

Tanner: How would you sum up your reaction on being voted "Best Nipples" in Obby's elections?
spect: Woot!

Tanner: Haha. You solve a damned fine Rubik's Cube. Who first taught you to do them?
spect: [Warning! Anti-climax!] I.... did it myself :/ Really, I just read the wikipedia article...

Tanner: Alright. Thanks for your time, spect.
spect: Thank you.
