Description Looking back on my latest maps, I've realised how uninspired and mediocre I've become in my complacency. So I've decided to return to my old style of mapping with a few new ideas; I loved these maps to bits and hope to make them even more successful. Credit goes to...

Maximo: For convincing me to add the gold bridge and eventually add the entire optional agd section.
Toasters: For inspiring me to use an irregular mine bed, like on his last map. Meant to look much more unkempt.

LouDog004: For inspiring me to return to making these highly individual distinct tilesets.

Skyline: For showing me that making a map individual that doesn't ride on the back of someone else makes it a better map in its own right.

Also, for the record, this was my 262nd map, despite what the counter says. I've delisted quite a lot of my old ones, which I'll make available via a link in my profile.

Faved, as well.
The mines are amazing and the tileset is ridiculous (in a good way). This is the rate exchange.

Wow

Well put, Myrrhman!

I've noticed that you seem to get a lot of criticism. My guess is because you put yourself out in the community a lot and are recognized thusly. What often happens is you'll begin to get discouraged, even though you make good maps, none of them seem good enough. This is the Mekkah syndrome. Don't be discouraged, even though everyone seems to always find something wrong w/ your maps, I genuinely think it is the community believing that you have talent, and not just nipping at the heels of someone for the sake of doing so or jumping on a bandwagon. This isn't to say to follow the criticism to a tee, but rather take what you need from it. You won't please everyone, and when you stop caring about that, I think you'll see a distinctive change in your mapmaking.
But I've cluttered the tiles up a bit much here. I'm going to continue making these maps, but I'm going to try and clean up the aesthetics a little. As said, they even detract from the gameplay at parts.

Also, example of a personality filled thwumps? :P
that lone clump in the mid-bottom seems to suggest so..

not your best gameplay wise. the double thwumps had, like, no personality. just "KKKEEEELL" you know?

tiles were sloppy, no construction just a bunch of weird slabs.

i quite dislike this style and i hope you dont keep it. it has close to nothing to offer gameplay or tile-wise. not your best

sooo...

i tried searching GTM and got like, 0 results. it was only then that i realized the computer still thinks you're guitar_hero_matt.

i'll play the map now.
Lol. I can see what you meant, but from first glance it was a pretty big contradiction :P
the gameplay is okay, it's tedious and it gets a bit annoying near the end. I liked the agd, it made it more fun! the tileset was great too! It wasn't great though, and it was pretty short, but overally, there were many good and creative ideas, so I rate this 4/5 (actual rate 4.5/5)
I think you summed up the map pretty well :)

Sweet AGD

About the same time as mrgy05's completion.

I enjoyed this map. I thought the two sections didn't entirely go well together, but each was well done. I actually like the chaingun bridge a little bit better than the thwumps - I don't know why everyone's complaining that the gold is hard to get. Overall, 4/5 from me.
Demo Data

Oh wow

Compared with my old maps, this isnt the look I was trying to achieve at all. :/

I guess

In comparison to my own recent maps, this feels fairly distinct and different, which is what I was trying to achieve. Although, looking back it does seem a little hectic and confused, probably moreso than I intended. I'll try and make the tiles and objects less distracting in future maps.

Also, about trumping up. If you were referring to the inspirations section, that was actually something I was planning on doing with the next few maps Ive made. I would have mentioned it, but seeing as it HTTP500'd 5 times whilst trying to sub it I just didnt bother in the end. :)

I'm not sure.

I just don't like this and I think if you trump a map up in your description to be unique it should live up to its promise.

So, in summary

I should make future maps more open so they encourage more choice (possibly using the wrong word again) and don't force the player into finicky moves (like the laser one you liked, to an extent)?
mark the same connotation in this context. All you've done is replace a word with one of its synonyms.

This map isn't distinct, there are no new mechanics on offer, some highly generic ones, and this type of archway/jagged/cave type tileset is common.

Silted: So rigidly constrained, formal, or awkward as to lack all grace and spontaneity. Which is what I felt playing this.

Takes a couple of seconds to google a word if you're unsure of it's meaning.

Responses

@atob: What do you mean by stilted? I've heard it thrown around often but don't really know what it means. Also, I meant that the map was distinct from other maps, which is probably what I should have said in the description. And I didn't mind the static chaingun, it didnt impede gameplay so I decided to make it static to add to the motif, kinda?
@chaostar: Redundant, mostly. Repetitive, not so much, but I didnt see any of my stuff really going anywhere.
@mrgy: I can see what you're saying, I'll try to tone these kinds of maps down a little next time. Probably more like that tileset I sent to Loudog for secret reasons.

you know,

(im kinda mad that there has been ONE MAP DOMINATING THE HOT MAPS PAGE ALL DAY!!!)

I think...

that the aesthetics in the map overpowers the game play, however, the game play wasn't awful either.

With one critique in mind, I think that the golden bridge looks great but plays well... not so great.

hmm.

are you saying you were becoming redundant and repetitive?

There really isn't

anything highly individual about any of this, it's not generic as such, but it's hardly unique (tiles and gameplay).

The gameplay here is a little awkward, too. The thwump section feels very stilted and I'm really not a fan of stationary chain drones. The gold bridge looks a lot better than it plays, too.

agd

like this map 4/5

Here's a demo

Your route was a lot different :P *does not include chaingun section*
Demo Data

Odd

I never got killed by the top thwumps. Ever.

Just like clockwork

i get owned by the top two thwumps every run. And i tried for 10 mins+. Awesome set though, and bottom four thwumps are great, and so is the chaingun. Just the key section is really frustrating, and not very enjoyable.

4/5
