but then as I experimented with different routes more the map really came together for me. It worked really well.

Ignore typos

Typing on phone on bus isn't the most precise way to communicate.
The full structure was done before I even decided on thwumps, and they were used as I feel they're the best suited to the relaxed feel I wanted.

The gold is very purposely placed so as you maneuver around the thwumps collecting it feels fluid and intuitive.

Honestly, I consider this one of my most coherent and polished maps. Not turing to argue you into my way of thinking, I just can't understand your criticism.
That, and the gold could have been placed better, so that you had to try and maneuver the thwumps to get it. I'm probably not making much sense, but in any case, this map didn't feel finished to me.
though the launchpad launches me into the ceiling corner when I approach from the left. So I moved it half a tile to the right and it was all good. Otherwise I thought this was perfect, enhanced by the choice of routes available.

Incoherent how?

The entire thing plays very solid to me, simply stating what you did doesn't help much...

Episodic, easy, clean... I'm interested in metanet style simplicity of play at the moment, and I'll explore it in the next few maps I make.
